Dating savage rifle serial number
Rough Savage 1895, 1899 and 99 serial number dating, based on the data I have collected over the years.
1895's: Serial number 3000-5000 manufactured in 1896. These are rough numbers based on letters from the historian, there are a few guns mixed into the higher numbers with a 1898 manufacture date but few and far between.
Date Codes, Sturm, Ruger & Co., Winchester Rifles, Winchester Rifle & Shotgun 1969 , Winchester Shotguns.
The “lever boss” is the extension of the lower part of the receiver into which the lever fits and rotates.
Here is a complete list of the Lever Boss Codes and their corresponding year of manufacture: A= 1949 B= 1950 C= 1951 D= 1952 E= 1953 F= 1954 G= 1955 H= 1956 I= 1957 J= 1958 K= 1959 L= 1960 M= 1961 N= 1962 O= SKIPPED P=1963 Q= SKIPPED R= 1964 S= 1965 T= 1966 U= 1967 V= 1968 W= 1969 X= 1970I believe the extended action was not released until 1957 and the tang safety was started in 1964 Hi Rick, Thanks again for the info. I think I'm going to need an electron-microsope to see the letter.
I'll follow thru once I find out what I'm looking at.
Date Codes, Ithaca Gun Co., Charles Lancaster, Joseph Lang, Marlin Firearms, Mauser Broomhandles, Parker Brothers Shotguns, Piotti, James Purdey, Remington Date Code & Sx S Shotguns, Savage/Stevens, LC Smith, Smith & Wesson, Spanish Year of Mfg.Anyhow, the serial number is 646346 and it doesnt have a letter in it. If the serial number is over 500,000 or starts with an A then a 6H would mean that inspector #6 did a final inspection of the rifle in 1956.If the serial number is lower or higher than that, then the stamp doesn't have any known meaning. Thanks again, Mike Hey there, you seem to be pretty smart about all this stuff.Me and my little brother recently purchased a Savage model 99 from one my my fiance's work pals.
